Whanau House Boards 2026

PUKAKI WHĀNAU HOUSE BOARD:

Our house board proudly tells the story of our people, our place, and our shared identity as a whānau. In the background stands the beauty of Mokoia Island (the birth place of Pukaki), surrounded by the calm, blue waters of Lake Rotorua. Depicted in the foreground, is the entrance to the pā at Ohinemutu, upon it, the carving of Pukaki which once stood there as a protector for his people.

Our koromatua, Pukaki - a symbol of courage, resilience, and fearless leadership. His story reminds us of the strength it takes to overcome hardship, rebuild after loss, and to pursue your goals. After taking refuge on Mokoia Island, Pukaki patiently planned the return of his people to Parawai, rebuilding their strength before leading them to reclaim Ohinemutu. His mana and determination helped secure Ohinemutu for future generations.

The pink sunset across the sky reflects our Pukaki house colour - bright, bold, and full of pride. On the horizon, five small waka can be seen carrying our Pukaki whānau across the lake, symbolising unity, purpose, and the shared learning journey of our five akomanga within our whanau.

At the sides, our tauira stand together, each holding a paddle to represent our whakataukī:
“Kaua e rangiruatia te hāpai o te hoe; e kore tō tātou waka e ū ki uta.”

Do not lift the paddle out of unison, or our canoe will never reach the shore.

This reminds us that we achieve success when we work together, support one another, and respect our whānau.

Our board is more than artwork - it is the story of our legacy, our strength, and our future as we journey through life and learning together.
2026 TE RANGIIWAHO WHĀNAU HOUSE BOARD
“Whiria te kaha, tua makatia, e motu honoa, purutia Rotorua”

“Plait the rope, double it if need be, splice it if it breaks, but hold Rotorua.”

We are incredibly proud

“Whiria te kaha, tua makatia, e motu honoa, purutia Rotorua”

“Plait the rope, double it if need be, splice it if it breaks, but hold Rotorua.”

We are incredibly proud to present our house board, a vibrant tribute to Mount Tarawera and a reflection of our focus as a kura this year. Marking 140 years since the 1886 eruption, this piece weaves together our history, our values, and our people.

At the heart of our design is the Poutama pattern, symbolising the personal growth of our students as they climb toward their goals, one step at a time. To honour the legacy of the Pink and White Terraces, we’ve included them as a reminder to our students and kaiako to pause, reflect, and find rest amidst their busy lives.

High above, grey and black diamonds capture the power of the eruption, while below, our Koromatua, Te Rangiiwaho, holds the rope that keeps us firmly tied to our home in Rotorua. Most importantly, every student is represented here through their own unique mahi toi, making this board a true reflection of our whānau.
Together, we honour the past as we step confidently into our future.

Mauri Ora!
Hurungaterangi House Board

Our whānau board shares our interpretation of the pūrākau of Hurungaterangi, a story of courage, responsibility, and determination. Through this artwork, we bring his journey to life, offering a visual way to show the most important part of his story as we understand it today.

At the heart of our board stands Hurungaterangi himself, holding a patu, representing strength, bravery, and his unwavering commitment to his whānau. As a self-manager, Hurungaterangi showed independence, discipline, and strong decision-making. His story tells of a young leader who took responsibility into his own hands, carefully planning and acting with purpose to avenge the death of his father. Under the cover of night, he made his way across the sandy shores, where Waiaho was tending to his fishing nets, showing courage, patience, and determination to carry out his plan.

We have intentionally anchored our artwork with the written pūrākau of Hurungaterangi on the left of our board. By including the story itself, we ensure that every visitor can connect the dots between the historical events and our artistic interpretation, seeing exactly where our inspiration met the brush.

Above, the sky is filled with stars, each one representing the names of our tauira and kaiako within our whānau written among the stars. These stars symbolise that we are always present within this story, watching over and honouring Hurungaterangi. They reflect our connection to our kura, our whānau, and to one another in all that we do. Together, they represent kotahitanga, united as one whānau, under one koromatua.

“Ko wai rā te hope nā Te Whatumairangi, kia kī tērā, nōna te toa? Nōna te toa!”
Who of the sons of Te Whatumairangi can claim the victory was his? The victory was his.

This whakataukī reflects pride, ownership, and the qualities of a self-manager; taking responsibility for your actions, showing initiative, and striving for success. It reminds us to stand tall, be accountable, and recognise the effort it takes to achieve our goals.

Our board is more than a painting. It is a reflection of our shared identity, our learning habits, and a visual way of capturing the most important parts of Hurungaterangi’s story. It shows our commitment to grow as self-managers, carrying his legacy with us into the future.
2026 Te Roro o Te Rangi Whānau Board

Tutūngia te hatete o ngā korero tuku iho

“Stoke the fires of desire for our history”

Tikanga/Meaning:
Our board this year is a tribute to the power of our past and the brilliance of our future. At its heart stands our yellow Taniwha, a fierce Kaitiaki of our identity. With our Whānau name etched upon its tongue, it represents our voice - bold, proud, and unapologetically Māori.

Rising above is Mount Tarawera in eruption, surrounded with colours of fire and ash in the sky, and pink and white to make our maunga. This pays deep respect to a defining moment in Te Arawa history from 140 years ago. The eruption is not just a story of the past; it is our "ahi kā" - the literal and metaphorical fire that drives our learning this year. It reminds us that from the heat of challenge comes the strength to rebuild and grow.

“Tutūngia te hatete o ngā korero tuku iho” / “Stoke the fires of desire for our history”

our chosen whakatauki is a powerful whakatauki to guide a school year. The key is to move from the abstract "history" to the idea of identity, storytelling, and sparking a literal passion.

Whakapapa/Process:
The elements of this board were crafted through a survey in which our tauira were asked two pātai:

What is a symbol in Te Ao Māori that represents strength and power?

What is one main focus we have as a whānau/kura this year?
TUNOHOPU WHĀNAU HOUSE BOARD:
“Hei aha au i te mate noa ake, i taku noa pakarito ka tipu.”
“And what if I die. Then through my descendants my legacy lives on.”

This famous whakataukī was declared by our koromatua Tūnohopū after his young son was kidnapped by a war party from the Ngāti Tūwharetoa tribe from Taupō. Tūnohopū determined he would rescue his son but he knew that setting off to Taupō with a war party would probably result in his son’s death. So he set off to Taupō alone, saying he would either recover his son or die. His actions resulted in a huge amount of respect shown for his bravery by Ngāti Tūwharetoa. Tūnohopū was able to bring his son safely home to Ōhinemutu and his brave actions demonstrated how much he cared that his descendants should live and pass on his legacy.

In designing our whānau board, Tūnohopū whānau have strived to honour the legacy of our koromatua by involving all of our tamariki in the traditional activity of raranga (weaving). Weaving is a profoundly significant cultural practice in Te Ao Māori. It connects us with tūpuna, nature, wairua and whakapapa. All of our Tūnohopū tamariki participated in our board by weaving a small whāriki (mat) to provide the background. Hine Kaha students came into each class to teach tamariki how to raranga. In Te Ao Māori, the female experts in the tribe traditionally passed on this important skill. Our Hine Kaha students became the experts who taught the other tamariki how to weave.
We used cardboard instead of traditional harakeke and chose four colours to represent our whānau and each of our four classes. The colours are woven together to show that while each class is unique, we are strongest when united as one whānau.

Hine Kaha is represented by hot pink/purple, symbolising mana wahine, strength and leadership. It reflects the confidence of our wāhine and their role as tuakana within Tūnohopū.
Ngā Tama Toa is represented by light blue, symbolising courage, loyalty and resilience. It also reflects the waters of our rohe and the strength of our young tāne.
Tūnohopū 2 is represented by dark purple, symbolising growth, determination and developing leadership as students build strong foundations.
Tūnohopū 3 is represented by light purple, symbolising creativity, potential and new beginnings, reflecting the energy our younger tamariki bring to our whānau.
The four colours woven together through raranga represent the different strengths, personalities and identities of our four classes coming together as one united whānau. Just as each strand in weaving supports another, each class contributes to the strength of Tūnohopū.
Our whānau board also depicts Tūnohopū wharenui at Ōhinemutu on Pāra te Hōata Marae. This is where Tūnohopū and his people once lived, and the wharenui was named in his honour. It is made from many small woven whāriki, showing how each child, like each woven piece, helps strengthen our whānau. Our tamariki are represented through group photos placed inside the wharenui, symbolising our culture and traditions being passed on to the next generation. Our students represent the descendants spoken of in Tūnohopū’s whakataukī - the living legacy who continue his strength, courage and values.
